If you live in or around Bridlington, Bempton, Flamborough, Filey, Scarborough or Driffield, you’ll know how hard it can be to find the right tutor for your child. Many of the bigger tutoring agencies focus on Leeds, York and Hull, and families on the coast and in the villages can end up with long journeys, online-only options, or tutors who don’t really know local schools.
What makes a good tutor?
A good tutor does far more than work through worksheets. Whether your child needs help with maths, English or science, look for someone who:
- is a qualified teacher and knows the curriculum your child is working towards
- has real experience with children, not just strong subject knowledge
- makes tricky ideas feel clear and manageable, without talking down to your child
- links learning to real life, so it feels relevant rather than abstract
- is patient, reliable and honest with both parents and pupils
When those things come together, tutoring stops feeling like a chore and starts building confidence — often the turning point for a child who has started saying they’re “just not good at maths”.
Introducing STEM by the Sea, based in Bempton
STEM by the Sea is run by me, Andy — a qualified primary teacher (BA Hons First Class, QTS) with over 12 years’ teaching experience in Yorkshire, Kenya and Malawi. Most recently I taught upper Key Stage 2 in a local primary school, where I led outdoor and environmental learning. I hold an Enhanced DBS and I’m an Individual Member of The Tutors’ Association.
Because I live and work here on the coast, I understand local schools, rural travel and busy family routines. Sessions are planned around your child, not a one-size-fits-all package.
1:1 tutoring tailored to your child
1:1 tutoring is for children aged 7 to 14 and focuses mainly on maths and English, though enquiries about other subjects are always welcome. Whether your child needs to rebuild confidence after a shaky year, close a few gaps, or be stretched a little further, we’ll agree clear goals together and plan every session around their strengths and needs.
Hands-on science, design & technology and Beach School
Alongside tutoring, STEM by the Sea runs small-group Science Practical Labs and Design & Technology Workshops in our workshop in Bempton, plus Beach School and Coastal Explorers sessions on the shoreline at Bempton, Flamborough and Bridlington. Groups are kept deliberately small, and sessions are practical and hands-on — ideal for children who learn best by doing.
Home-educated children, children in EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than At School) and children with SEND are all warmly welcome. I’m also happy to visit schools, Scouts, Guides and other groups across the East Riding and North Yorkshire.
When sessions run
Sessions run Monday to Thursday, 9am–4pm. Group workshops usually run from 10am to 12 noon, with 1:1 tutoring arranged around you within those hours. STEM by the Sea launches in late October 2026, and early sessions can already be arranged.
No child should miss out because of cost
I know the cost of tutoring can be a real barrier. From early 2027, I hope to offer a number of funded and subsidised places for families who need them most. If cost is a worry, please just ask — a quiet word is all it takes.
